President Barack Obama has invited republicans to the White house to participate in a televised discussion on health care reform. Obama said in an interview with CBS News anchor Katie Couric on Sunday:
“I want to ask them to put their ideas on the table, and then after the recess, which will be a few weeks away, I want to come back and have a large meeting, the Republicans and Democrats, to go through systematically all the best ideas that are out there and move it forward”
Is his proposal an attempt to reach across party lines and come together with republicans to form a bipartisan solution to health care reform? Certainly not, if Obama wanted a bipartisan solution to health care he could have attempted this months before the democrats lost their super majority in the senate. No, Obama’s plans are to pressure republicans into going along with his liberal agenda. Which, I might add, reminds me a great deal of one of the causes listed in the declaration of independence:
“He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.”
-The Declaration of Independence
Obama’s motives are compliance, not compromise. Also, if we look a bit deeper into his proposal to republicans we will find much more sinister motives. His outreach to republicans is a clever yet predictable attempt to taint the republicans chance for sweeping election wins in November of this year. If he can manage to convince any republicans to vote for the bill then the resulting backlash from American voters, who overwhelming oppose the legislation, would be less than desirable. However, if he is unsuccessful in forcing republicans to comply with the proposed bill, he will campaign against the republicans as the party that refuses to compromise for the good of the American people. Why else would he televise the event when he didn’t televise any of the democrat only back-room deals? Simple, Obama wants the American people to see that no matter what happens, it is the republicans fault. What the republicans need to recognize here is that the American people want them to stand firm to their conservative values. The only answer republicans should be giving to Obama is No.
