I don’t want free health care. I want to be able to BUY an insurance policy that is worth something to my family. I work hard everyday and so does my husband, but because he has asthma and I have mild endometriosis, we are not allowed to purchase insurance in the private “for-profit” free market. Oh, except the $40,000 per year guaranteed issue policy we were offered. That policy would not pay one dime of any medical expense unless we paid that entire $40,000 out in less than one year. Then it would pay 50% the remainder of the year. We aren’t poor, but we can’t afford that, and I highly doubt many people in this country could. We have never spent a fraction of that amount of money in a year in our lifetimes on medical care. We are also independent contractors/entreupreneurs…supposedly the spirit of America. Ha. Most people are clinging to jobs they hate because they live in fear of not being able to get health insurance if they leave.

Others work and pay into health insurance their entire lives, and then are dropped when they get sick. We pay the highest taxes of any country in the world…we just don’t call most of it a “tax”. We hand over thousands upon thousands of dollars over the course of a lifetime to for-profit health insurance companies who do not provide a single health benefit. They are merely a middleman taking a profit. We pay huge administrative costs unrivaled by any other country. Talk about bureaucracy!! These are the REAL death panels. The insurance companies, not your doctor, decide what kind of treatment, if any, that you will recieve. We are the only country in the civilized world who has declared health care a Privelege, and not a Right. Eighty percent of uninsured persons in this country right now are employed. If we are denied coverage by the private “free market” insurers, what do you suggest we do? If costs continue to escalate at the rate they have been, the average family will be paying $50,000 or more per year for a lousy insurance policy within the next 15-20 years. How is this sustainable? I don’t really think it should be “government run”, but I do think there should be a non-profit insurance option for those of us who are tired of being screwed by those who place profit above all else.

The CBO has determined that the current health care bill will pay for itself in 20 years. What do you think it would cost if we did nothing? Trillions.

As for the stimulus spending, much of that money went to pay for unemployment benefits for the millions who have lost their jobs over the past two years. The free market companies are not hiring, at least not in this country, primarily because they have to pay enormous premiums to keep their current employees insured. They don’t have to do that when they ship jobs overseas. My husband was laid off from his job in 2007 and spent every single day of nine months looking for work. He applied for over 200 jobs, most of which he was well over-qualified for. He did not get a single call or interview until 3 weeks after his unemployment benefits expired. We almost lost our house…which we could not sell becuase it was no longer worth what we paid for it, or even what we owed for it. This is what the free-market did to our economy because they were completely unregulated and their “speculation” drove housing prices to an unsustainable level. Right now, there are more than 100 people looking for a job for every single job opening out there. What is your suggestion for what we do with these people? Toss them out on the streets? Put them in prison? Send them somewhere else?? What?

It’s too bad we could not see what would have happened if absolutely nothing had been done. Most economists agree that the effects would have been devastating beyond anything the world has ever seen. Let’s just hope that you don’t lose your job, your house, and your health benefits…and then get sick. Thousand of people are dealing with issues like this on a daily basis in this country. Our economy relies on millions of people working for slave wages. If you don’t want to pay for their health care, then start insisting they get paid a living-wage. Also, require companies to hire every single person who is capable of working a job. Otherwise, come up with a better plan instead of DO NOTHING, and I’ll bet people would listen to you. Lowering taxes on the wealthy helped create the problem. Nobody starts a war and lowers taxes simultaneously (except for G.W. Bush). All of our problems were created by letting the free market corporations rule this country for too long. Our government is merely a pawn catering to their every beck and call.

I don’t need to think “Cuba” when I can think of other countries who do quite well with non-profit health care: Switzerland, Norway, France, Germany…and 33 others who have better health outcomes at a lower price per person than the U.S.

Capitalism is the extraordinary belief that the nastiest of men, for the nastiest of reasons, will somehow work for the benefit of us all.

Secondly, you mention that Obama has to spend more money to clean up our mess right. Well, please show me what proven economic method outlines spending more money to get of debt? If you were in debt, would you get yourself in more debt to get out of the original debt? Spending money does not create any permanent jobs. It may create a few jobs in the short term, but those jobs eventually fade. Then we will be right back where we started. Except we will be further in debt. There comes a point were raising taxes and pushing up the debt becomes regressive. That is, there is a point when raising taxes actually results in a decrease in revenue and economic activity. Conversely, it is tried and true that lowering taxes and debt results in an increase in revenue and stimulation of the economy. Let the free market work.

Thirdly, since you seem to support a “Public Option” I can deduce that you are also a fan of “Social Justice” and “Fairness.” Well I can assure you of one thing, under these types of social redistribution programs we will all be equal. We will all be equally impoverished and dependent on the federal government as our soul provider of all things necessary to survive. Think Cuba!… Oh, and while I’m on the topic, what gives you or any other person the right, to take money from my paycheck; Which I worked hard to earn. In order to pay your own expenses. If someone other than the government did such a thing it would be considered theft. Thus, you are an advocate of legalized theft.
